Diesel Generator Repair

Diesel Repair QA/QC Path to GT

Your diesel repair shop already knows that a job is only as good as its measurements. When gas turbines arrive, a repair closed without clearances, torque records or a named sign-off can put a turbine back in service with a hidden defect that trips it within days.

You cannot inspect quality into a turbine after it runs. If your QA/QC stops at diesel practice, you are carrying repeat failures, warranty disputes and outage risk into every turbine job.

USP&E Helps You Carry Diesel Repair QA/QC into GT

We know your best technicians already work to a standard, even when it lives in their heads instead of on paper. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers write inspection and test plans, set hold points and calibrate tools so turbine repairs carry the same proof as your best diesel jobs. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Quality control is what lets you prove a repair was right. On turbines, where clearances are tight and failures are expensive, that proof is part of the job.

Write Down What Your Shop Already Checks

List every hold point, measurement and sign-off your diesel repair jobs already use. Bearing clearances, crankshaft deflections, injector tests and torque values are often recorded well on some jobs and skipped on others.

Turn that list into a simple inspection and test plan for each job type. Name who measures, who witnesses and what the acceptance value is.

Keep the plan short enough to use. A plan that nobody can follow on the shop floor will be signed at the end without being read. Print it on the job card, leave space for the actual reading next to each acceptance value, and ask your technicians which steps are hard to measure so you can fix the method rather than lose the check.

Build Turbine Inspection and Test Plans

Your gas turbine generators need their own plans before turbine work starts. Borescope findings, blade clearances, alignment readings, fastener torques and lube-oil cleanliness all need acceptance values from the maintenance manual.

Set hold points where work cannot continue without a witness. Closing a casing, releasing a unit for first fire and returning it to service should each need a named sign-off. Foreign material exclusion belongs here too, because a rag or bolt left inside a turbine casing can destroy blades on the first start.

Calibrate torque tools, gauges and test sets on one register for both fleets. A wrench out of calibration is a hidden risk on any machine.

Reject Weak Repairs and Feed Lessons Back

Reject repairs that close without measurements, photos and a named sign-off. That standard feels strict at first, and it quickly cuts repeat jobs.

Plan cover during repair windows. Natural gas engines/stations or a remanufactured GE Frame 6B can carry load, and verified used/new gas turbines can fill longer gaps while your team works to the plan.

Feed repeat defects into root-cause reviews and update the plans. The same records matter on AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, where the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA is supported by a hyperscale EPC/O&M team that expects signed proof for every repair.

Proof from Recent Diesel Repair Projects

You want proof that USP&E has repaired and run power plants where every job had to be proven. These projects show that record.

  • USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
  • Barrick Gold, Loulo-Gounkoto, Mali: USP&E rebuilt more than 80 MW of Caterpillar CM32 engines and added 24 MW of new zero-hour capacity, delivering a 104 MW station with 300% greater reliability and availability than previously recorded at site. Read the case study.
  • Mining O&M recovery, Mali: USP&E took over a 100+ MW plant of 15 Cat CM32 engines left in critical condition, restored availability to about 95% and cut maintenance and repair cost per engine by 66%. Read the case study.

HowTo: Carry Diesel Repair QA/QC into GT

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share job cards, repair records and tool registers under NDA. 2. Receive turbine inspection and test plans and hold points. 3. Apply the plans, then run repairs under accountable O&M.

  1. List every hold point, measurement and sign-off your diesel repair jobs already use.
  2. Write inspection and test plans for gas turbine generators before turbine work starts.
  3. Calibrate torque tools, gauges and test sets on one register for both fleets.
  4. Reject repairs that close without measurements, photos and a named sign-off.
  5. Plan cover with natural gas engines/stations or a remanufactured GE Frame 6B during repair windows.
  6. Feed repeat defects into root-cause reviews and update the plans.

FAQ: Diesel Repair QA/QC Path to GT

Why does diesel repair QA/QC matter for turbines?

USP&E sees turbine repairs closed without clearances, torque records or sign-offs, then fail soon after return to service. Your shop already measures many of these items on diesels. Writing them into turbine inspection and test plans turns good habits into proof you can show.

What is an inspection and test plan?

USP&E uses an inspection and test plan to list each measurement, its acceptance value, who checks it and who witnesses it. You follow the plan through the job. At the end your records show the repair met the standard, not just that someone signed the card.

Which hold points should a turbine repair have?

USP&E sets hold points at casing closure, release for first fire and return to service, with others for alignment and borescope checks. You cannot pass a hold point without a named witness. That stops rushed work from reaching your running machines.

Why calibrate tools on one register?

USP&E keeps torque tools, gauges and test sets for both fleets on one calibration register. You then know every reading came from a trusted tool. An out-of-date wrench on a turbine casing or coupling is a hidden failure waiting to happen.

Where are USP&E’s offices that support this work?

USP&E anchors diesel repair QA/QC work in Johannesburg and Cape Town, where quality and reliability engineers sit close to your workshop. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi supports China supply chain and manufacturing. Every office works from the same project file.

Has USP&E delivered power projects like this before?

USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also cover Barrick, Resolute and Kinross, where accountable EPC and O&M kept industrial power online. You can read each case study and judge the evidence yourself.

Is USP&E a broker for this equipment?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants with its own engineers and project managers, so the team that writes your turbine hold points stays accountable when the unit returns to service. You deal with one accountable team from first review to O&M.

How fast can USP&E respond on this topic?

USP&E can start reviewing your job cards, repair records and tool registers as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag missing measurements first, then issue turbine plans, with timing set by data quality and site access for your workshop.

Prove Every Turbine Repair Before It Runs

Get QA/QC right and your turbines return to service with proof the work was done well. Get it wrong and the first sign is a repeat failure days later. USP&E will help you plan, witness and record with confidence.
