Diesel Generator Repair · Powered by USP&E
Diesel Repair Cooling Path to GT
Your repair team already knows which jacket-water pumps cavitate, which radiators are fouled and which thermostats lie to the operator. Now your site is adding gas turbine generators, and those cooling problems will not stay in the diesel hall.
If cooling debt is carried into the new plant, the risk is overheating trips, failed lube oil coolers and shared cooling loops that drag both fleets down. You end up with repeat downtime, lost output and a new turbine blamed for faults your site already knew about.
USP&E as Your Guide From Repair to Gas
We respect the knowledge your repair crews have built the hard way. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations, supplied about 25 000 MW and guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified and work under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Close Out Cooling Faults Before You Expand
List every cooling defect from your repair records: pump cavitation, coolant chemistry drift, radiator fouling, fan failures and thermostat faults. For each one, find the root cause and decide whether it is fixed, managed or still open. Open items are your first project, because they reveal how water treatment, maintenance and design work on your site.
Coolant chemistry deserves special attention. Inhibitor levels, pH and contamination drift slowly, then damage liners and heat exchangers fast. Put a sampling routine and a named responsible person in place before any new machine joins the site, and record results where both diesel and turbine teams can see them.
Design Turbine Cooling So It Does Not Inherit Old Problems
Gas turbines need lube oil coolers, generator air coolers and sometimes inlet cooling, each with its own duty. Size them for your hottest season and dustiest wind, and avoid tying them into a diesel cooling loop that already struggles. Separate loops, or a shared loop with proven spare capacity, keep one fleet’s fault from tripping the other.
Radiator and fin-fan coolers foul quickly on mine and industrial sites. Specify access for cleaning, a cleaning interval and spare fan motors. Natural gas engines/stations added for auxiliaries should follow the same cooling standard, so your crews work to one set of procedures.
Bridge and Grow on a Clean Cooling Record
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B should only be evaluated once diesel cooling debt is visible and owned. Ask for cooler data sheets, oil analysis history and any overheating events with the records and inspection scope, and compare used/new gas turbines on how well their cooling suits your site.
If the site later plans AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators or gas turbines for compute, reserve space for cooler banks and water treatment. The planning reference is modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028. One contractor carrying hyperscale EPC/O&M keeps cooling records continuous as the site grows.
USP&E Offices Serving Diesel Repair Buyers
Southern Africa is home base. USP&E’s Executive HQ in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) owns engineering, procurement and project controls for your diesel balance-of-plant repair and GT upgrade, and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) backs it with design and commissioning support.
Equipment and finance for diesel BOP spares, rebuilt engines and gas turbine packages draw on the wider network: London (162-168 Regent Street) supports structuring and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) link you to US supply and engineering, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) covers China sourcing and manufacturing.
For a repair-led site, that means the engineer who reviews your cooling defect list also specifies the turbine coolers and returns for commissioning, so the lessons your crews learned on diesel are written into the new plant. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. USP&E has guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries, and is ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
Proof from Recent Diesel Repair Projects
You want proof that USP&E can rebuild and recover troubled fleets. These projects show engine rebuilds, plant recovery and supply done to a standard.
- USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
- Barrick Gold, Loulo-Gounkoto, Mali: USP&E rebuilt more than 80 MW of Caterpillar CM32 engines and added 24 MW of new zero-hour capacity, delivering a 104 MW station with 300% greater reliability and availability than previously recorded at site. Read the case study.
- Mining O&M recovery, Mali: USP&E took over a 100+ MW plant of 15 Cat CM32 engines left in critical condition, restored availability to about 95% and cut maintenance and repair cost per engine by 66%. Read the case study.
HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your cooling defect list, coolant results and outage history. 2. Get a repair close-out and turbine option set with EPC and O&M scope. 3. Commission clean cooling systems and hand over one maintenance plan.
- Catalogue diesel jacket-water and cooling defects, coolant trends, and which duties may migrate to gas turbine generators.
- Compare diesel repair retention, natural gas engines/stations, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, and verified used/new gas turbines against that matrix.
- Review candidates at the central inventory hub and request records, inspection findings, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
- Reserve interfaces for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
- Rewrite cooling procedures, interlocks, training, spares, and O&M ownership for the mixed fleet.
- Complete funding, repair close-out, and commissioning rehearsals before final GT selection.

FAQ: Diesel Repair Cooling Path to GT
Why fix diesel cooling problems before adding a gas turbine?
USP&E fixes cooling debt first because unresolved faults reveal how water treatment and maintenance really work on your site. If those habits carry into turbine coolers, the new unit can overheat, trip or suffer lube oil problems, and your site loses output to faults it already knew about.
Should a gas turbine share a cooling loop with diesel gensets?
USP&E usually recommends separate cooling loops, or a shared loop only where spare capacity and water quality are proven. A loop that already struggles with diesel duty can drag the turbine down too, so one pump or radiator fault never takes out both fleets at once.
Is a remanufactured GE Frame 6B compatible after diesel cooling repairs?
USP&E evaluates a remanufactured GE Frame 6B once your cooling faults are visible and owned. Cooler data sheets, oil analysis history, overheating events, records and inspection scope are reviewed together, so the unit’s cooling needs match your site’s hottest season and the maintenance your crews can sustain.
Where are USP&E offices that support diesel repair sites?
USP&E’s Executive HQ in Johannesburg owns engineering and project controls, and its Cape Town office backs that with design and commissioning support. London supports finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville link you to US supply and engineering, and Wuxi covers China sourcing for coolers and balance-of-plant.
Has USP&E delivered engine rebuilds and recoveries before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies include rebuilding more than 80 MW of Cat CM32 engines at Barrick’s Loulo-Gounkoto, and a Mali recovery that restored availability to about 95%.
Is USP&E a broker for repair and turbine work?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that repairs, engineers, supplies, commissions and operates power plants, so the team that closes your cooling faults and specifies the turbine coolers stays accountable for how both fleets perform afterwards.
How fast can USP&E respond to a cooling review?
USP&E can start reviewing as soon as you share your defect list, coolant results and outage history. A first view on the open faults follows quickly, and the full timeline depends on site access, the condition of equipment and whether replacement coolers or pumps need to be sourced.
What should O&M cover after the turbine joins the site?
USP&E includes coolant sampling, cooler cleaning, fan and pump checks, lube oil analysis and temperature trending in post-handover O&M. Each task has a named role and frequency, so a rising temperature on either fleet is caught and acted on long before it becomes a trip.
