Diesel Repair Exhaust Path to GT
You repair diesel generators, and you know the exhaust tells the truth. Rising back pressure, uneven cylinder temperatures and black smoke at load point to problems long before an engine fails. Now your site is talking about gas turbines, and the exhaust system is a different animal.
Get the exhaust side wrong and you face derated output, cracked ducts, noise complaints and permits at risk. A stack that cannot handle turbine flow, or a silencer that chokes it, means lost megawatts and costly delays at the worst possible moment.
USP&E as Your Guide From Diesel Exhaust to Turbine Stacks
We know repair teams carry the blame when a unit underperforms, even when the design was the problem. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations and supplied about 25 000 MW, and our 400+ engineers and project managers have repaired diesel fleets and installed gas turbines on the same sites. We work under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Read What Your Diesel Exhaust Log Is Telling You
Your exhaust log is a diagnostic record. Track exhaust gas temperature per cylinder, turbocharger inlet and outlet temperatures, and back pressure at rated load. A single hot cylinder often points to an injector or valve problem, while a gradual rise in back pressure across all cylinders suggests a restricted silencer, a blocked catalyst or carbon build-up in the manifold.
Log these values against load and ambient temperature so trends are meaningful. Combine them with lube oil analysis and fuel consumption, and you can plan repairs before failures. That same discipline helps you judge which diesel units deserve a rebuild and which should be retired as gas turbine generators arrive.
Understand Why Gas Turbine Exhaust Is a Different Scale
A gas turbine moves far more air than a diesel engine of similar output, at high temperature and with very little tolerance for back pressure. Ducts, expansion joints, silencers and stacks must be sized for that flow, and every extra bend or restriction costs output. Reusing a diesel stack for turbine exhaust almost never works.
Plan stack height for dispersion and permit limits, check structural loads and wind, and design expansion joints for thermal growth. If you expect heat recovery later, reserve space for a diverter damper and boiler. Natural gas engines/stations have exhaust needs closer to diesel, so a mixed fleet needs two exhaust philosophies on one site.
Check Frame 6B Exhaust Condition and Plan Growth
If you evaluate a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or other used/new gas turbines, inspect the exhaust plenum, diffuser, expansion joints, insulation and stack for cracks, corrosion and missing liners. Exhaust thermocouple records show spread across combustors, which tells you about hot-section health.
For growth, reserve stack corridors and duct routes for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1 blocks, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz with capacity slots from 2028, where the CCGT arrangement adds heat recovery. If nearby compute loads bring AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, keep exhaust design inside one hyperscale EPC/O&M scope.

HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your exhaust logs, repair history and site drawings under NDA. 2. Receive a repair, retire or upgrade plan with exhaust design. 3. Execute repairs and installation with accountable O&M follow-up.
- Summarise the diesel exhaust repair log and note which loads may move to gas turbine generators.
- Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines, natural gas engines/stations, and future modular blocks on exhaust condition and layout needs.
- Review equipment at the central inventory hub and request exhaust inspection findings, records, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
- Reserve stack locations and duct corridors for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
- Write exhaust inspection intervals, joint spares, thermal survey routines, and O&M owners into one matrix.
- Complete permits, funding, fuel agreements, and exhaust commissioning checks before final equipment selection.

FAQ: Diesel Repair Exhaust Path to GT
What can a diesel exhaust log reveal before a repair?
USP&E uses exhaust logs to find problems early. A single hot cylinder often points to an injector or valve issue, while rising back pressure across all cylinders suggests a restricted silencer or carbon build-up. Trends against load and ambient temperature help you plan repairs before an engine fails in service.
Can a diesel stack be reused for gas turbine exhaust?
USP&E rarely recommends reusing a diesel stack for turbine exhaust. A gas turbine moves far more air at high temperature with very little tolerance for back pressure, so ducts, silencers and stacks must be sized for that flow or the unit loses output and risks structural damage.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support diesel repair and turbine upgrades?
USP&E supports diesel repair and upgrade work from its Executive HQ in Johannesburg and its Cape Town office, which carry engineering, project controls and commissioning. London structures finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville connect you to US parts and engineering, and Wuxi follows up China manufacturing.
Has USP&E delivered diesel repair and rebuild projects before?
USP&E has delivered repair, rebuild and supply work on many stations, including supplying 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies include the Golden Pride controls upgrade and the 104 MW Barrick Loulo-Gounkoto rebuild in Mali.
Is USP&E a broker for repair parts and gas turbines?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that repairs, rebuilds, supplies, installs and operates power plants, so the team diagnosing your exhaust problems is also responsible for the repaired engine or new turbine performing on your site.
How fast can USP&E respond to a diesel repair request?
USP&E can review exhaust logs, oil analysis and repair history as soon as you send them. Engineers identify likely causes and parts first, then plan site work, and the timeline depends on parts availability, outage windows and site access rather than on a slow sales process.
What should I inspect in a used gas turbine exhaust system?
USP&E inspects the exhaust plenum, diffuser, expansion joints, insulation and stack for cracks, corrosion and missing liners. Exhaust thermocouple records show the temperature spread across combustors, which helps you judge hot-section health before you commit to buying or installing the unit.
Should I plan for heat recovery when adding turbines?
USP&E recommends reserving space for a diverter damper and heat recovery boiler if combined-cycle operation is possible later. Adding the space during the first layout costs little, while retrofitting heat recovery into a tight exhaust path can mean rebuilding ducts, foundations and stacks.
